Top 5 Ways To Protect Yourself From The Sun Without Sunscreen

Being out in the sun can be a lot of fun. Your days can be filled with:

  • Warm rays that make you tingle on the inside
  • Playing sports or lounging around by the pool
  • Fishing, hunting, racing dirt bikes
  • Enjoying magnificent hiking views from the top of a mountain

Or, your days can be filled with lobster red skin that’s hot to the touch and itchy.  On a bad day, sunburns can cause excruciating pain.

Yeah, that doesn’t sound like fun to us either.  Being out in the sun for too long can ruin anyone’s day.  How can you get more of the fun stuff?

In this article, we’re going to explore 5 alternative (and cool) ways you can stay out in the sun for hours without lathering yourself moist with sunscreen.

(And no… we’re not going to recommend umbrella hats…)

Not Everyone Wants To Be Reapplying Gobs Of Sunscreen

Yes, sunscreen is a protective barrier against those heavy UV rays, but not everyone wants to stink of sunscreen every time they go out.  That’s the big problem with sunscreen. It only lasts for a few hours before it needs reapplying.

It’s also sticky and often stinks.  Combine that with sweating and you’ve got quite the cocktail.
If you’re going to a nice restaurant afterward with leather seats, you might glue to them! The chef will have to bring out his spatula to pry you loose!

Despite the cons, we cannot look past the importance of protecting our skin, especially if you’ve got pale skin.

The following alternatives are a great way to protect yourself and not feel gross at the same time.

#1 – Wear A Light Shirt And Roll Up The Sleeves

If you roll up your sleeves, you’ve basically turned your light shirt into a T-shirt.

However, you now have the option to ROLL DOWN the sleeves to give your skin a break without having to seek shade.

These breaks are important. Your skin produces a limited amount of melanin (which controls your tanning pigment). After your time is up, more sun exposure will just cause damage and NOT grant you a deeper tan.

#2 – Wear A Flexible Bandana That Can Protect

Your face has thin skin, which makes it more vulnerable to sun damage.

If you don’t enjoy the feeling of sunscreen dripping into your eyes and mouth, you can protect your head by using flexible bandanas.

Depending on your angle to the sun, you can either use a tubular bandana as a beanie, a face mask, or a light scarf to protect the back of your neck.

The key here is to have flexible material that is light enough to not bother you and designed to block damaging UV rays from penetrating the material.  Hoo-rags fit the bill for this. Each tubular bandana is made of technical fiber designed to wick away sweat and keep you dry while blocking UV rays.

#3 – Wear A Long-Brimmed Sun Hat

Whether it’s a cowboy hat, a daisy-filled sun hat, an Australian outback hat or a sombrero, wearing a long-brimmed hat will protect your face and neck from heavy sunlight exposure.

The best part? You will look cool!

Unless, of course, it’s an umbrella hat. You have a 0% chance of looking cool in an umbrella hat (based on our scientific research).

#4 – Use Sunglasses That Block UV Rays

If your eyes are exposed to heavy UV rays for too long, you run the risk of developing serious eye diseases such as:

  • Cataract damage
  • Macular degeneration
  • Pingueculae
  • Pterygia
  • Photokeratitis
  • And other words I’ve no idea of what they mean!

But here’s where you need to be careful. Not all sunglasses protect you from UV rays. Even darker-tinted glasses doesn’t equal protection.

Check the labels on sunglasses. If it says “Meets ANSI UV requirements”, you’ve got a winner. It will block at least 99% of UV rays.

#5 – Combine A Face Mask With A Baseball Cap And Sunglasses

Nothing beats a great combo! Especially if it involves steak, fries, and beer! When it comes to keeping our friend sunburn at bay, nothing beats combining the use of a face mask with a baseball cap and sunglasses. Not only will it block off all UV rays, but if the material of the face mask is light and soft enough you’ll feel great the entire time. The best part? You can always take a break from the face mask by pulling it down.

Hoo-Rag To The Rescue!

With a Hoo-Rag bandana, you’ll look badass AND feel comfortable the entire time!
All of our bandanas have flexible and breathable material. Because our bandanas are tubular, you can use them in many ways. They will also stay in place because there is no knot that can come undone.
